A: Yes, L-Soft Direct is not a full-service sales channel. If you need business advice, a free technical consultation, a live product demonstration or any other high-profile sales services, you will need to contact L-Soft's regular sales channel or another authorized reseller. If you just want to make a purchase, L-Soft Direct's "no frills" service offers an automatic reseller discount and, in most cases, an L-Soft Direct perk.
Q: Are there other considerations when deciding to buy or not buy from L-Soft Direct?
A: L-Soft Direct income goes directly to the R&D and product support departments (the people who answer your support questions, write fixes and develop new versions). Only invoicing costs, merchant/bank charges and a small order commission are withheld. When you buy from an authorized reseller, a significant fraction of your money is used to fund the reseller's sales and marketing efforts. If your reseller's sales and marketing activities provide value to you, you should not buy from L-Soft Direct. Do buy from L-Soft Direct if you want as much as possible of your money to be invested in R&D and product support.
Q: Why are your reseller discounts lower than at [company]?
A: Some companies price their products to be able to offer big discounts to resellers. We do not do that at L-Soft. We do, however, work with very small resellers. If Jane and her brother start a company in their basement to provide services to one big client, that's fine. As long as we think they can represent our products professionally, we will give them 10% on the big client's $10,000 purchase. Jane makes a quick $1,000 on top of her consulting contract and is very happy. And we will not require Jane to purchase a $10,000 not-for-resale "reseller kit" in order to qualify as a reseller and gain access to the discount.
Q: What is the L-Soft Direct perk?
A: Depending on annual volume, our authorized resellers get a free LISTSERV Maestro license for their own use only (not for resale or hosting), plus free demo licenses for their sales force. Very small resellers get only the demo licenses. These freebies would not work as customer perks. Instead, we give a free LISTSERV Maestro upgrade to customers with a compatible LISTSERV license (Classic or HPO, with at least 20-list capacity). LISTSERV Lite purchases are upgraded to enable the LISTSERV Classic archive search functions, currently an L-Soft Direct exclusive.
Q: Is L-Soft Direct staffed by administrative order bookers?
A: No, L-Soft Direct is actually staffed by sales representatives from L-Soft's regular sales channel. They receive L-Soft Direct inquiries as a performance bonus, so you will tend to speak with our more experienced representatives. Although they are sales professionals, they are not allowed to give follow-up or upsell calls on L-Soft Direct sales, except when it is time to renew your license or maintenance. They also do not "own" your account, so the results of any such efforts would likely go to someone else.
Q: You said L-Soft Direct will not answer detailed bid questionnaires, but what about basic quotes?
A: We would be glad to give you a quote, even a complex one. What we cannot do is answer dozens of questions such as, "Please list three major customers who have successfully deployed your solution with SQL Server 2000 in a clustered environment".
Q: Are all L-Soft products and services available from L-Soft Direct?
A: L-Soft Direct can sell you any off-the-shelf product or service pertaining to LISTSERV®, LISTSERV Maestro or LMail. HDMail, hardware appliances and custom-quoted consulting and hosting services cannot be bought under L-Soft Direct's commercial terms, but we do provide one-stop shopping for your convenience.
Q: How does one-stop shopping work at L-Soft Direct?
A: Let's say that you want to buy a LISTSERV license with consulting services to install and configure it. L-Soft Direct only sells the LISTSERV license and maintenance, not the custom consulting service, but it will source it for you from L-Soft's regular sales channel so that you can purchase everything from the same place. You will receive the reseller discount and perk on the license and maintenance, and pay the normal price on the custom consulting service.
Q: Can I pay with a U.S. check?
A: Sure, we do accept U.S. checks as long as they are drawn on a U.S. bank, or the U.S. branch of a Canadian bank.

You will have your own account manager and enjoy the benefits of consultative selling. L-Soft Direct will transfer you to the regular sales channel if you need this kind of help. L-Soft Direct is for customers who have a fairly good idea of what they want to buy and are looking for the convenience of a hassle-free automatic discount, coupled (in most cases) with a free LISTSERV Maestro upgrade. You will not receive follow-up or upsell calls from L-Soft Direct, other than when your license or maintenance is about to expire.
Q: I got a follow-up call from an account manager after buying from L-Soft Direct. You had promised nobody would call me!
A: L-Soft Direct will not assign an account manager to you and will only contact you when it is time to renew your license or maintenance, but other resellers (including L-Soft's regular sales channel) may still give you follow-up calls if you have an existing relationship with them. In particular, if you used the one-stop shopping service to purchase a mix of L-Soft Direct and custom-quoted products, an account manager will have been tasked with preparing your custom quote and will probably call you to ask if you are satisfied with the consulting assignment. At your request, L-Soft Direct can let L-Soft's regular sales channel know that you do not want to be disturbed, but we recommend keeping that door open in case you need consultative assistance in the future.
