LISTSERV
Technical Requirements


This page outlines some of the most important hardware, software and networking requirements for running LISTSERV. More details and operating system-specific information can be found in the LISTSERV installation guides.

Requirements:

  • A computer with a fixed connection to the Internet
  • A static IP address assigned to the computer running LISTSERV
  • A Fully Qualified Domain Name for the computer running LISTSERV
    (DNS A Record)
  • Web server software on the computer running LISTSERV
    (For example, IIS or Apache)
  • An SMTP-compliant mail server through which to send outgoing mail

Example Configurations:

Small Configuration (Up to about 50,000 subscribers)

CPU:

Pentium or equivalent, 200 MHz or faster

RAM:

128 MB minimum

Disk:

2 GB available disk space

Bandwidth:

DSL, Cable or T1


Medium Configuration (Up to about 1 million subscribers)

CPU:

Pentium or equivalent, 500 MHz or faster

RAM:

256 MB minimum (512 MB recommended)

Disk:

12 GB available disk space
Ultra-wide SCSI or SATA or RAID 1 or RAID 5

Bandwidth:

T1


Large Configuration (More than 1 million subscribers)

CPU:

Pentium or equivalent, 1.4 GHz or faster

RAM:

1 GB minimum (2 GB recommended)

Disk:

36 GB available disk space, RAID 1 or RAID 5
RAID controller with 64, 128 or 256 MB RAM cache with battery backup
RAM cache must be configured for write-back

Bandwidth:

4 x T1 or 10 Mbps Fractional T3 or greater
